What is Anger Management?
Everyone occasionally gets angry to one degree or another. Most of us are able to handle that anger without negative consequences to ourselves or others. Some people, however, allow their anger to erupt into aggression or hold it in so that it leads to tension, stress, and in some cases disease. Anger management is a set of techniques people can use to avoid aggression when they are angry, and to decrease the frequency and intensity of their angry feelings.
Who does it help?
People that benefit the most from anger management are those who often feel angry out of proportion to the situation and express their anger with aggressive behavior, including yelling, sarcasm, or physical violence. Participants in our anger management program report a decrease of up to 75% in the frequency and intensity of their feelings of anger and aggressive behavior upon completion of the program.
How does it work?
A typical anger management program involves education and practice. It is often
presented in a classroom setting to a group of 10 to 20 people. A qualified instructor will begin by helping people increase their awareness of their angry/aggressive behavior. The instructor will also explain and demonstrate different anger management techniques and then require each participant to practice these techniques during and after the classroom program. Some programs also require individual sessions with the instructor to evaluate progress. By the end of the program participants should learn and practice the following:
- Techniques to physiologically calm themselves.
- How to think in calming ways.
- How to solve problems by standing up for themselves without being angry or
aggressive.
