We believe having a job is a key step in gaining independence, but for many adults with a severe and persistent mental illness, finding and keeping a job can be extremely difficult. Through our Vocational Program, we encourage clients to choose, get, and keep the job of their choice. We help each client capitalize on his or her skills, maximize his or her abilities, and pursue his or her true interests.
Before clients look for work, they usually attend a two-week training program that covers work place attitude; interviewing techniques; skill identification; communication skills; compiling information for a resume or application; and several other aspects of employment.
The effect of a person's mental illness can fluctuate. At times, an employee who was very productive can find it impossible to perform at their usual level. In those cases we are available to work alongside clients to help them get back on track. With the client's permission, we can also brief supervisors and co-workers on the nature of the individual's illness so they are able to respond appropriately if needed.
